Compare DVD ripper roles

Quick answer: start with a short MP4 using H.264 video and AAC audio when broad TV, computer, and phone playback is the priority. Compare MKV when you need more flexible audio and subtitle tracks. If you need the original menu and disc structure, choose DVD copy software for ISO or VIDEO_TS instead.

This guide is for self-authored DVDs, family video, and media you own or are authorized to convert. HandBrake’s own documentation states that it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection; this page does not provide a protected-disc workflow.

DVDFab DVD Ripper

The vendor’s current page lists DVD, ISO, and VIDEO_TS inputs plus MP4, MKV, and other outputs. It also publishes many performance and format-count claims. Treat those as vendor information until reproduced with your own source, drive, computer, and settings.

HandBrake

HandBrake can encode readable DVD or backup sources to MP4 or MKV. Its official source documentation explicitly says it does not circumvent copy protection. Its container, preset, anamorphic, and filter documentation makes it useful for comparing device-oriented encodes after you already have a readable input.

Plex and Jellyfin

They are not DVD rippers, but their client documentation determines whether the result Direct Plays, remuxes, or transcodes. Test the output in the actual app and hardware you plan to use.

Eight selection criteria

  1. Readable input: physical DVD, ISO, or VIDEO_TS must match your current source.
  2. Container and codecs: compare MP4/MKV separately from H.264/H.265 and AAC/AC-3.
  3. Correct title: check runtime, beginning, ending, and chapter pattern before a full job.
  4. Audio tracks: preserve the required language, commentary choice, and channel layout.
  5. Subtitles: test normal and forced subtitles separately on the target client.
  6. Picture geometry: keep the intended display aspect ratio instead of stretching the stored DVD frame.
  7. Interlace handling: use comb detection or deinterlacing only when a representative sample shows the problem.
  8. Trial and platform: verify the current operating system, output limit, watermark, duration, renewal, and refund route.

A short-sample workflow

  1. Record the expected title runtime, opening, ending, audio, subtitles, and chapter count.
  2. Choose a 30-second to several-minute sample with motion, dialogue, a subtitle event, and a scene that reveals aspect-ratio errors.
  3. Create a conservative MP4/H.264/AAC encode without enlarging the source simply to claim a higher resolution.
  4. Check whether faces and circles have the correct shape and whether motion shows comb-like artifacts.
  5. Switch audio and subtitle tracks; confirm lip sync and subtitle position.
  6. Play the sample on the actual TV, phone, browser, Plex, or Jellyfin client.
  7. If the server converts the file, inspect whether container, video, audio, or subtitles caused it.
  8. Compare MKV or a filter change on the same sample only when the first result exposes a need.
  9. Encode the complete title after the sample passes, then check its beginning, middle, and end.

DVD-specific picture checks

DVD video can store display-shape information separately from the stored frame dimensions. HandBrake’s anamorphic documentation explains why a file can be stored one way and displayed at the intended 4:3 or 16:9 shape. Preserve the source display aspect rather than stretching the image by eye.

If motion shows comb-like artifacts, compare HandBrake’s comb detection and deinterlace options on a short section. Do not enable aggressive filtering by default: it changes the picture and can remove useful detail when the source did not require it.

Upscaling an output resolution does not recreate detail absent from the DVD. Judge the result at normal viewing size and compare motion, faces, text, and dark scenes with the readable source.

Subtitle and audio failures

First compare the source track list with the output track list. A subtitle can be present in the file but unsupported by the client, and a media server may convert the video to burn it into the picture. Try another container, subtitle format, or a short burned-in sample only after identifying the actual mismatch.

For missing tracks, use Missing subtitles or audio instead of re-encoding the entire title with random settings.

DVD Ripper is not DVD Copy
