Quick answer: choose ISO when you want the DVD structure in one file, a VIDEO_TS folder when another application needs direct access to the DVD files, and blank-disc output only when you need a physical copy and have a compatible writer. If your goal is MP4 or MKV for a phone, TV, Plex, or Jellyfin, use a DVD ripper instead.
This guide is for self-authored DVDs, family video, and media you own or are authorized to preserve. It does not evaluate tools by their ability to bypass protection on commercial or rental discs.
Choose the output before the product

The current commercial capability to verify
DVDFab DVD Copy’s official page currently lists Windows and macOS support, blank-disc, ISO, and VIDEO_TS folder output, plus Full Disc, Main Movie, Clone/Burn, Customize, Split, and Merge modes. These are vendor-published capabilities. CopyBluray did not reproduce the vendor’s speed, quality, disc-support, or protection claims.
Use the trial, when available, to prove the exact output path you need. Do not assume that an application which can open an ISO can also create one, or that “main movie” retains the menu and extras.
Understand the copy modes
- Full Disc: intended to retain the complete structure, subject to the input and output settings.
- Main Movie: selects a title and normally excludes some menus or extras.
- Clone/Burn: targets a disc-shaped duplicate and may require matching destination capacity.
- Customize: lets you select titles, tracks, or structure, so the result is no longer a simple 1:1 assumption.
- Compression: may be required when the selected input does not fit the destination; visual quality then needs a real check.
Names vary between products. Confirm the current documentation and inspect the summary before starting the job.
Check DVD-5 and DVD-9 before copying
Record the source size and the selected destination size. If a larger source must fit a smaller destination, the workflow needs title selection, compression, or both. That changes the result: menus, extras, audio, subtitles, or picture quality may be affected.
Do not choose a destination from the printed label alone. Let the application inspect the source, then check what it plans to keep and whether compression is enabled.
Seven buying and trial checks
- Required output: blank disc, ISO, or VIDEO_TS folder.
- Mode behavior: Full Disc, Main Movie, Clone, and Custom must be clearly distinguished.
- Current operating system: verify the exact supported Windows or macOS edition.
- Writer requirement: ISO and folder output need a reader; a new physical disc needs a writer.
- Track control: confirm the menu, titles, chapters, audio, and subtitles you need.
- Trial and billing: check duration, output limits, renewal, refund path, and current checkout terms.
- Verification: the software should let you review the planned output and preserve useful warnings or logs.
A practical verification workflow
- Begin with a short self-authored or copyright-free DVD.
- Record the application version, operating system, drive, source type, and source size.
- Choose Full Disc or the required titles, then select ISO, folder, or blank disc.
- Review compression, target size, audio, subtitles, and warnings before starting.
- Open the completed ISO or folder in a second compatible player.
- Test the menu if required, then the beginning, middle, and end of the main title.
- Jump between several chapters and switch required audio and subtitle tracks.
- For a burned disc, repeat the test in a different compatible player or drive.
- Keep another copy on independent storage; a newly written disc should not be the only retained copy.

ISO or VIDEO_TS?
ISO is easier to move and inventory as one file. VIDEO_TS is easier when inspection or editing software needs direct access to the DVD structure. Both require compatible playback software, and neither is proven good merely because the files exist.
For long-term retention, include the result in a broader personal media archiving plan with an independent copy and a periodic open-or-restore check.
DVD Copy is not DVD Ripper
Copy software retains a disc-style destination. Ripper software converts selected titles to playback files such as MP4 or MKV. Common mistakes
- Expecting a larger source to fit a smaller destination without selection or compression.
- Using Main Movie mode while expecting the original menu and every extra.

- Assuming a writer is needed for a hard-drive ISO or folder.
- Trusting the completion screen without checking the ending, audio, subtitles, and chapters.
- Keeping the new disc as the only surviving copy.
